(BLOOMINGTON) - A 20-year-old woman accused of leaving five dead small pets, a live hamster and two live dogs covered in their own waste in her eastside Bloomington apartment earlier this month now faces three charges of animal cruelty.
20 year old Yiming Qu was arrested by Monroe County deputies and booked into the jail at 5:48 p.m. Friday. She was released from the jail the same evening after posting a $2,000 surety, $500 cash bond.
The Monroe County Prosecutor's Office filed three misdemeanor charges of cruelty to an animal against Qu on Thursday, and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
The animals -- including two dead guinea pigs, one live hamster and two live dogs covered in their own waste -- were found June 17th in an apartment in the 3100 block of East Stratum Way by apartment management. City police and animal care and control officers were then called to Qu's apartment.
Three other dead animals were also found inside the apartment. Animal control officers could not tell if the animals were gerbils or hamsters because they were already in a state of decomposition.
Qu told police said she had arranged for a friend to feed and water her animals. She also told police she did not feel responsible for what happened to her animals, according to earlier reports from Bloomington police.
She relinquished control of her surviving pets -- a tan Syrian hamster, a male Labradoodle dog and a male husky-Samoyed dog -- to Bloomington Animal Care and Control.
Qu is enrolled as a first-year student for the upcoming fall semester at Indiana University, according to an email from Ryan Piurek, a spokesman for IU.
