Washington Co. Courthouse Still Leaks Following $346,975 Bill

Last updated on Friday, July 12, 2013

(SALEM) - Washington County has paid at least $204,273 for repairs to the courthouse roof and at least $142,702 for repairs to the stones on the exterior of the building - a total of $346,975 - and still the building leaks.

The Leader Democrat reports, Courthouse Custodian Tony Maranto is frustrated and met with Washington County Council Monday telling them they need to do a better job overseeing repair works on the courthouse and follow up when contractors say they have completed the work.

Maranto told the council that the leaks originate both from the roof and the stone exterior, but mentioned it was difficult trying to determine which company should be held responsible for resolving the problems. T & G Construction was given the contract for roof work while BJB handled work on the exterior, which included repairing loose stones and caulking around windows.

He told the council that the shingled portion of the roof was replaced first, then the rubberized sections. Workers had to walk over the shingled sections to reach the rubberized sections. But Maranto says the rubberized section should have been replaced first, because workers had to walk on the shingled section to do the rubberized part.

Tom Scifres, attorney for the county, is working on resolving the problems. Maranto says with as much money as the county has paid for the repairs it should have been done right.

Maranto doesn't want to lay blame and recognized there were many contributing factors, but there should have been a walk-through inspecting the repairs before the county paid the bills.

Workers from BJB are working on the courthouse now, finishing up the stone work.
