(BLOOMINGTON) - Two people suffered serious injures following an accident on Ind. 37 and West Vernal Pike Sunday.
All four lanes of highway remain closed as crews work to clean up fuel.
According to Bloomington Police Sgt. Joe Crider, a grey passenger vehicle was traveling south on Ind. 27 around 9:20 p.m. was stopped at a red light when a tractor trailer carrying fuel failed to stop and rear ended a passenger vehicle. When officers arrived, they found the tractor trailer lying on its side, south of the intersection, and the passenger car was off the road to its east.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 45-year-old woman, was transported to IU Methodist Hospital with serious injuries, while her passenger, a 14-year-old girl, was sent to Riley Hospital.
A second passenger car was also struck, resulting in minor damage to that vehicle. No one was injured in that vehicle, according to police.
The 48-year-old driver of the tractor trailer told police she was not feeling well and does not remember the accident.
Crider says she was treated for minor injuries at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Police are withholding the names of the crash victims because of the severity of their injuries and the potential impact on charges.
All lanes of Ind. 37 were closed to traffic Sunday night into today as police investigated the crash and a team from Bloomington Township Fire Department helped contain the leakage of fuel and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is also on-scene.
