Teen Earns Eagle Scout After Repairing ISP Jasper Post Sign

Last updated on Tuesday, July 16, 2013

(JASPER) - Over the last year, Luke Upton, of Jasper, has helped the Indiana State Police Jasper Post by restoring and beautifying the sign along Newton Street in front of the post.

The exact date of when the old sign was originally installed is unknown but the Indiana State Police have been working out of the current location since 1938.

Luke noticed that the sign needed repaired and or replaced and asked Post Commander Lt. Don Bolen if he could take on the job as his Eagle Scout Project.

Bolen agreed and Luke began planning and coordinating his project with Indiana State Police employees Rich Clark and Brian Freson.

Over the next few months, with the help of the Indiana State Police Alliance, Luke completed fundraising to pay for all of the materials needed.

Once the monies were raised it was time to put his plan into action. Over the course of the project Luke supervised several other scouts and volunteer adults in removing the old sign and moving several tons of dirt, rock and tree roots.

He also coordinated with the Jasper Street and Utility Departments to insure no damage was done to the existing infrastructure.

Through this effort a tree that was growing into utility lines was removed and the location of the sign was moved a short distance west from its original location.

After purchasing all the materials and prepping the location, the new sign and landscaping were put into place.

"The new sign and landscaping look very nice," said Lt. Bolen. "Luke did an outstanding job planning, coordinating, and executing the project, and for that we are thankful and proud to have been part of his Eagle Scout Project."

On Sunday a ceremony was held at Precious Blood Church where Luke received his Eagle Scout Award.
