(BEDFORD) - Becky Skillman, CEO of Radius Indiana, asked the Lawrence County commissioners Tuesday morning to pass a resolution to seek a joint land use study for Crane.
The study will involve five counties, Lawrence, Martin, Daviess, Orange and Sullivan and is sponsored by the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
A similar study was done at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center and Camp Atterbury. The joint land use study will assess the relationship between the area's economic development and planned expansion of the military installations, and additional installation exercises. Surrounding communities will collaborate on this study in order to assess and address the current and future needs of the study area. Skillman says this is a competitive process and if chosen OCRA will offer support and technical assistance to partnering communities. After the study is complete OCRA will then provide funding to for some of the recommendations from the study.
In other business:
Centerstone provided the commissioners with their yearly update. They have developed a new recovery coaching service this year which is funded through a health technology grant. The program assist those in need with recovery matters empowering individuals to become productive citizens. The program does not cost anything for those who are involved.
The commissioners granted a request from Kenneth Goben and his wife to vacate several unused alley ways in Lawrenceport.
The commissioners open bids and took them under advisement for a dump truck to replace one that was destroyed in an accident last year.
Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 148 inmates in the jail, 19 were department of correction holds and 24 were women. He also said the jail inspection was complete and a final report with recommendations would be complete in about 10 days.
County Project Manager Bob Dillon reported that work on the Popcorn Road bridge would begin this week and repairs should be done before school starts. After that work is complete, repairs will begin on bridge No.55 on Leesville Road.
Commissioner Bill Spreen asked about the possible demolition of Hunter's Creek Bridge. Spreen says he was approached by an individual willing to do the work. But Highway Foreman Larry Hardman says county workers would be able to do the job easily.
Highway Superintendent Dave Holmes reported the paving schedule for this week. He also says crews were cutting brush and mowing. Spreen also says the heavy rains in the past weeks have caused damage to many of the county ditches and asked Holmes to address those issues.
Both Commissioner Chris May and Spreen asked Holmes to have someone from the paving companies attend the next commissioners meeting because they had questions on some of the bids for the road paving.
May says he was confused why the price for mix was higher if the county used their trucks to haul the asphault then if the companies used their trucks.
"Something is amiss and I would like this explained to me," May says. "I believe we are entitled to a break down on the bids so we know what we are paying for."
