(SALEM) - Crews are moving tons of earth as the Washingon County Jail expansion and renovation project gets underway.
The Salem Leader reports, Les Smith, with Shireman, the firm serving as construction manager for the project, says some 1,200 to 1,300 truckloads of soil - each weighing 20 to 30 tons - are being hauled to the site.
The soil is being hauled from the quarry on the west side of Salem. It is tested every eight inches for compaction and moisture content.
He added that rainy weather has been a factor, but will become less of a problem once the site work is done.
The basic project involves the addition of a pod, increasing the number of beds to 204, along with a new kitchen and laundry area.
Also, part of the plans are renovating the space used by Superior Court.
The present facility was built in 1986 and was designed for a population of 56. The population now numbers in the high-90s.
Once the site is preparted construction will begin. Smith estimates the project with take about a year to finish and should be complete by next summer.
The cost of the project is estimated at $9,295,835 and is being paid through bonds backed by property tax revenue
