Ralph Purkhiser Named Orange Co. Outreach Coordinator For SICIL

Last updated on Monday, July 29, 2013

(PAOLI) - Ralph Purkhiser has been named the new Orange County outreach coordinator for the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living.

SICIL, headquartered in Mitchell, provides services to people with significant disabilities in Orange, Lawrence, Monroe, Washington, Crawford, Jackson, Bartholomew and Brown counties, with an outreach coordinator serving in each county.

Purkhiser is a lifelong Orange County resident and has been active in a number of organizations. He serves on the Springs Valley School Board, the Lost River Vocational Cooperative Board and the Orange County Extension Board.

SICIL promotes a policy for self-help and self-advocacy among individuals with significant disabilities. As the county outreach coordinator, Purkhiser works with Orange County residents to allow them to continue living independently with a good quality of life. While many of SICIL's consumers are older people who do not need nursing home care but require some special assistance to live independently, the services at SICIL are available to people of all ages.

SICIL programs include the areas of education, recreation, transportation and housing. SICIL also promotes peer counseling and support groups.
