(UNDATED) - Area melon farmers are taking steps to safeguard against contamination in this year's crop.
Regulations have been tightened in the wake of cantaloupe contamination in Gibson County last year, and a further problem reported in Colorado melons in 2011.
Knox County Purdue Cooperative Extension educator Valerie Clingerman says area farmers have increased their safety measures.
Various melon safety workshops have been held throughout the year in Knox and surrounding counties. Clingerman says those seminars have been well-attended.
Other safety improvements have come to melon haulers and to produce packing houses.
Producers hope the increased safety will mean a better, safer crop this season.
