Passerby Foils Theft Of Scrap Metal

Last updated on Thursday, July 25, 2013

(JASONVILLE) - Jasonville Police credited an alert passerby with foiling an attempted theft of metal.

Officer James Gadberry says not only did the man stop the trio of thieves but he told them to take back the stolen goods and they did.

19-year-old Robert Fowler and 18-year-old Kage Fougerousse and a male juvenile were all charged with theft.

According to a probable cause affidavit a passerby noticed the three at the home of Bill Mattox on County Road 1500 West. The person turned around to approach the men but the truck had left the scene. The three alleged criminals were out looking for more metal to scrap when the passerby appeared, blocked their truck and asked them what they were doing. He then told them to take the items back to where they got them and called Mattox. Who then called police.

When Officer Gadberry arrived the three were waiting near an old shed and had replaced the items ( a space heater, several metal light fixtures, some loose metal) they had stolen with the intent to sell for scrap.

The teen became involved after Fowler and Fougerousse asked him to use his truck to do some "good old scrapping."
