(BLOOMINGTON) - The city of Bloomington is getting its first taste of a parking meter plan approved in March for the college town’s downtown area.
Bloomington's first "smart" parking meters were scheduled to go online Monday along Morton Street. Those meters with slots for coins and credit cards will soon be installed in front of most of the on-street spaces in the city's downtown.
The Herald Times reports, the city council approved the paid parking system in mid-March. Officials have said they expect the entire metering system to be fully operational by the second week of August.
Bloomington public works director Susie Johnson says people who fail to pay the meter during their first week of operation should receive warnings, not tickets, as drivers are educated about the new system.
