Mitchell Junior-Senior High School Cafeteria Should Be Complete Before School Starts

Last updated on Friday, July 19, 2013

(MITCHELL) - The cafeteria and kitchen remodeling and expansion work at Mitchell Junior-Senior High School is on schedule and should be completed by the time students return to school August 5.

The Times-Mail reports, about 400 students are enrolled at the junior high school, and roughly 580 more are enrolled at the high school. The two schools share the cafeteria and kitchen, which operate through multiple lunch periods.

The old kitchen and cafeteria did not have the capacity to serve meals to all of the students.

MHS students had been allowed to leave campus for lunch. The open campus allowed students some freedom and a break during the day. But there were also problems with students not returning to campus and disciplinary issues. In addition, an Advance Education school accreditation team and the Indiana Insurance Co. advised MHS to close its campus for safety reasons. In May, the board voted to close campus.

The renovations are not only updating the facility and equipment, it enlarged the cafeteria to accommodate all of the students.

Superintendent Steve Phillips says crews are painting wall and putting in ceiling tiles and pouring the floor. The kitchen equipment arrived on Tuesday and the food supplies will arrive on July 30th.
