(MITCHELL) - Pending approval from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, additional money will be set forth to continue demolishing dilapidated structures and to fix ailing sidewalks in Mitchell.
During Monday's regular city council meeting, elected officials put their final stamp of approval on two proposed additional appropriations.
The first would move $50,000 out of the Cash on Hand line item in the General Fund to the building department to pay demolition fees associated with the removal of dilapidated houses. The second moves $10,000 from the same account to the street department to pay for the homeowner sidewalk program.
Both were discussed in length at the June meeting, but needed to be advertised before the council could OK them.
Clerk-treasurer George James said the appropriations would be sent to the DLGF for final approval, but he doesn't anticipate a problem. "They'll be available soon," James said of the funds.
The city council also approved a change to the city's rental housing code. The law was passed by the city council during its regular meeting in May. However, thanks to a law passed by the state legislature, it needed to be updated, said Steele.
Steele told the council the new law states municipalities can't require owners to obtain a license before renting a unit. "(The code) hasn't been used yet, because of this change," Steele told the council, which approved the change, 5-0.
