(BEDFORD) - The four local Lions Clubs - Bedford, Bedford Noon, Mitchell and Fayetteville Community - with the assistance of the Lions Clubs of Indiana, will conduct a countywide free vision screening for all adults and children at the Lawrence County 4-H Fair from Sunday through July 13, from 5:30-9:30 p.m.
All visual acuity screenings will be performed with Optec 5000 visual testing machines purchased with grants from the Lawrence County Community Foundation and GM Bedford Casting/Friends of Powertrain Charity for Kids.
The screenings will take place in the Expo Building at the fairgrounds, thanks to the support of three sponsors: Day & Carter Mortuary, Sipes Auto Body & Glass and George Wealth Management Group.
All adults will be screened for both far and near visual acuity and proper peripheral vision using a Humphrey FDT visual field testing machine.
Children of all ages will be screened for far and near visual acuity.
There will be no cost for any of these screenings. The eye-screening process takes about 10 to 15 minutes and will be done on a first-come, first-screened walk-in basis.
The Lion screeners will be screening to determine how well each person can see and also look for indicators of other problems that may be present. Vision screening of all children is very important since one out of 20 preschool children has a correctable vision problem and one out of four school age children will have some type of vision problems.
Children do not really know how well they should be seeing, so they will not complain about having poor vision.
A written report is provided for each person screened and, if screening indicates, a recommendation for a professional eye exam will be made. This eye screening is not intended to be a complete eye exam, like those performed by your eye doctor.
According to a press release from the Lions Clubs, it cannot be emphasized too strongly the importance of seeing your eye doctor if this screening suggests the possibility of some vision problem.
The release continues on by saying, "The lack of family economic resources should not prevent seeing an eye doctor as soon as possible.
"If the family cannot afford this expenditure, you may qualify for assistance from Saving Sight Indiana. When you bring your family out to the fair, stop at the Lions booth and 'see' the Lions."
