Jeremiah Brassard Sworn In As New Bedford Firefighter

Last updated on Tuesday, July 16, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Jeremiah Brassard was sworn into office at the Bedford Board of Works Monday afternoon.

Brassard, a firefighter from Greencastle, is replacing BFD Battalion Chief Kenny Teague who retired June 1. Teague had been with the department for 35 years.

In other business:

* The Board approved Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley's request to change a yield sign on R Street onto 26th to a stop sign.

"The request came from Natalie Smith a resident in the area," Parsley says. "She is concerned about the increase in pedestrian traffic from the school at the church and in the neighborhood and I went out there and checked out the situation and agree with her."

* The board approved for Plan Commissioner Dan Kirk to secure a new contract with SMARTGov Sofware.

"We are currently using software from Black Bear and they are out of business," Kirk told the board. "For the last four years we have had problems with the system (which issues permits) and there is no one to repair the problems."

Kirk told the board SMARTGov bought the license from Black Bear and has assured Kirk they can merge all of the city's files into the new system.

The cost of the service is $5,000 for the first year and $7,500 a year after that.

"That fee includes all maintenance, training and problem solving," Kirk added.

Mayor Shawna Girgis told the board the money was in the budget to purchase the new software.

* The board voted to establish a handicap parking area at 1917 7th Street.

Chief Parsley says Larry and Shirley Tirey requested the parking space because Larry is suffering from medical problems and at this time cannot safely get to his driveway at the back of their home and into a vehicle.
