Interactive Tasting Workshop To Help Reduce Sodium In Recipes

Last updated on Tuesday, July 9, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - Local chefs and restaurant staff can sign up to participate in an interactive tasting workshop Wednesday, August 14 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at KRC Catering on South College Avenue.

The event is hosted by Hospitality Program Chair at Ivy Tech and an IU Health Registered Dietitian Jeff Taber.

Participants will learn creative ways to modify recipes to decrease sodium without losing flavor.

After completing the workshop, participants will be eligible to participate in the Taste Challenge. Participants will choose one menu item from their restaurant and alter the recipe to lower the sodium. They will then submit a proposal on how they plan to sustain sodium reduction in their restaurant.

A panel of community judges will taste the final dish and review proposals for an overall score.

Those wishing to participate must sign up by Monday July 29 by contacting Kathy Hewett at 812-349-2722.

According to recent data, restaurants are the number one source of consumer's sodium intake, Between 70 to 80 percent of sodium is already added in the food we eat. Consumers are advised to avoid dining out and are demanding healthier options.
