(MONTGOMERY) - Daviess County’s Amish community and the Daviess County Commissioners meet Monday in a special meeting to discuss the rocks used on the roadways.
The Washington Times Herald reports the Amish men believe the size of the rock, number 5, are too big for the horses to trot on and is causing the horses to go lame.
Veterinarian Matt Lyons agreed, reporting to the commissioner he has seen an increase in lamed horses due to bruising on the sole of the hoof caused by the rocks
The Amish depend on their horses and this is causing a problem in their lifestyle.
Commissioner Larry Wilson, felt he was to blame for the lame horses because he pushed for county highway crews to keep a lot of stone on the roads.
The Amish and commissioners agreed a smaller rock would be better and Highway Superintendent Phil Cornelius brought samples of different size stones to the meeting. The group decided to use a number 8 size stone which is smaller in the area where there is a lot of horse traffic.
Cornelius told the commissioners using the smaller stone would be more expensive but would not have a figure until the stone was in use.
