(SALEM) - Eight security cameras are being installed at Delaney Park in an effort to curb ongoing bouts of vandalism.
The Leader Democrat reports, Manager John Burlington says at least two of the cameras will be aimed at the restrooms near the primitive camping area.
Recently vandals stuffed items into the commodes, including T-shirts and pop cans, and workers were forced to pull every commode to unclog them.
Cameras will also be aimed at the cash register and boat dock. Burlington says there were problems at the dock over Memorial Day weekend, where someone was cutting boats loose from their moorings.
Chris Gross, who has recently been promoted to assistant manager, says the cameras will be live feed and employees at the park will be able to view the monitors from their smart phones.
Burlington believes the cameras and additional lighting will resolve the vandalism problems. They will also be installing more security lights.
There are also other changes at the Park.
Burlington plans to shut down the diving platform because of safety issues. He says the beach will be posted with "swim at your own risk" signs.
Removal of the platform means lifeguards will not have to be on duty at all times and Burlington said he hopes to transfer money for lifeguards to a line item supporting staff for the restaurant.
Burlington also talked of plans to add five more camping spots for annual campers. His figures show the park has taken in $170,000 this year and $114,000 of that is rent from annual campers.
There have been a few other issues at the park. One camper had to be evicted after he was threatening others in the park. The individual's camper is still there and Burlington with talk with park board attorney Ryan Bower to resolve the issue.
Board members also fielded a complaint about people being reckless while driving golf carts.
