(BEDFORD) - The County Commissioners renewed their health insurance policy with Parker Group Tuesday morning.
Miles Parke told the commissioners the renewal came with no increase to the county.
Parke says the rates held firm, which is unusual when other counties were seeing a 12 to 14 percent increase. The county also saw a slight decrease in the cost for vision coverage.
In other business:
* The commissioners approved the appointment of Janie Craig Chenault to the Community Corrections Council.
* Marsha Ralston, of Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation presented the commissioners with the soil and water budget.
* Morris Bennett asked the commissioners if they could do something about the condition of Copperhead Valley Road. Bennett says the road is in bad shape and is beyond patching. Highway Superintendent Dave Holmes will look at the road and see what can be done.
* Holmes says crews are dragging county roadways in preparation to begin chipping and sealing them. Some of the roads considered are Kings Ridge, Back Creek, River Road, Jerry Roberts and others.
* Project Supervisor Bob Dillon says crews are finishing the decking on the Popcorn Road bridge and will be starting work on the Leesville bridge next week.
* Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 143 inmates at the jail, of those 24 were women and 14 Department of Correction holds. Craig says the inmate population has been up the last few weeks because of more felony arrests.
* Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer reported she had attended a training on dispersing emergency supplies during a catastrophe and will be hosting a practice drill this spring.
* Marla Jones, of the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council, updated the commissioners on PRD. The company purchased $3 million dollars worth of equipment to upgrade their LED product line. The company thanked the commissioners for granting them tax abatements to continue to allow them to grow.
* Brad Hawkins and Stephen Caraway requested the council vacate an alley in Needmore. The commissioners determined the alleyway had been vacated and deeded to the surrounding property owners.
* Tim Wray asked the commissioners permission to widen a small road in Williams. Wray wanted to widen the road for logging trucks and to place a mobile home on his property. He also complained about the neighbors in the area blocking parking with cross ties and trespassing on his property. The commissioners told Wray it was a civil matter. Wray will meet with Sheriff Sam Craig to discuss the problems.
* Rex Jones with WTH addressed the issue of parcel numbering in the 39 Degrees North and meet with officials to address parcel re-numbering.
