(UNDATED) - Brown County, McCormick's Creek and Spring Mill state parks are three of 21 parks hosting hunts this year in an attempt to cut down the deer populations

The parks have been conducting rductions hunts since 1993 and they have helped with the over browsing by the deer which damage forests' ecosystems by eating too much of the herbal layer, like wildflowers, grasses, ferns adn other young plants and trees.

DNR biologists say a diminished herbal layer causes a loss of food and shelter for other animals, pollination, saplings, and seedlings.

Deer hunts keep the herd levels down to what teh food supply can support.

There will be two rounds of the reduction. The first will begin Nov. 18 and the second on Dec. 2.

State parks hosting hunts in 2013 include:
Brown County
Chain O'Lakes
Clifty Falls
Fort Harrison
Indiana Dunes
McCormick's Creek
Potato Creek
Spring Mill
Summit Lake
Turkey Run
Whitewater Memorial
