(SALEM) - The Washington County Fair is right around the corner.
Marcia Walker of the Leader Democrat reports that the annual event, a highlight of summer in Washington County, arrives about a month early this year. The fair board changed the date in anticipation of school starting earlier this year.
Brady Amusements, the carnival, had no open dates in July so the fair board settled on the last full week in June. The official dates are Saturday, June 22 through Saturday, June 29.
However, activities start well before then. The open class sheep show is scheduled for this Saturday, June 8, with weigh-in from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and the show at 2 p.m.
The first 4-H activity associated with the fair is the 4-H Horse & Pony Western & English Show which is to take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 15.
The ever popular baby contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Salem High School; the theme is Nursery Rhymes.
The theme of the fair parade, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, June 23, is "Washington County Fair, the Greatest Show in Town."
Already, entries are coming in according to Lana Hamilton, parade superintendent. Entry forms can be found in the fair book, available at The Leader officer or the Extension office, and on line at www.salemleader.com (look under submit a form).
Hamilton says, this year, there is an entry fee. The state suggested each county fair do something to help food banks - 'FAIRs Care.' The fair board decided the fair parade is a good place to start. The entry fee is a canned good or nonperishable food item that will be collected the day of the parade.
Spectators are also asked to bring canned or non-perishable items, which will be collected along the parade route to be given to the food bank.
Pam Hawes, office manager at the county Extension office, said things are moving along smoothly in the 4-H department.
The date for projects to be entered is Friday, June 21. Judging for most projects will take place from 9 a.m. to noon that day.
An open house at the 4-H building at the fairgrounds is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23.
This year, there are 532 4-H members, who have signed on for 1,857 projects, which includes everything from animals to posters to clothing.
