Three Injured After Head-On Collision In Linton

(LINTON) - A Linton teenager was rushed from the scene of an accident by helicopter, north of Worthington Thursday morning.

According Greene County Sheriff's Department Lt. Bryan Woodward, 17-year-old Mercedes Shafford, of Linton, suffered a possible broken leg and other injuries. She was flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital.

According to police, Shafford was traveling south on U.S. 231 in a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and 21-year-old Kainen Owings, of Dugger, was driving north on U.S. 231 in a 2003 Lincoln Town Car.

A witness told investigators Shafford's vehicle drifted over the center line.

"It was unclear if (Shafford) was attempting to pass or just drifted left of center," Woodall wrote in his report.

Owings told police he met a pick-up truck on the roadway, when the other vehicle crossed the center line behind the truck, and he was unable to avoid the collision.

The collision occurred on U.S. 231, north of County Road 25W.

Owings complained of pain but refused medical treatment at the scene. He was taken to by private vehicle to Terre Haute Regional Hospital. His 6-year-old passenger, Jamison Ewers, complained of rib pain and a headache. He was taken to Greene County General Hospital for treatment.

Other departments assisting included Indiana State Police Trooper John Yung, Worthington Fire and Rescue, Worthington Police Department, Greene County Ambulance, and Lifeline Air Ambulance.
