(MONTGOMERY) - An Indiana state trooper was shot this afternoon when an armed robbery suspect opened fire.
Jarrod Lents, who's been with Indiana State Police for nine years, was responding to an armed robbery at a gun store when he was shot.
ISP Capt. Dave Bursten says the man went into the gun shop and demanded a gun be sold to him. When the gun shop owner refused, that's when police say a gunfight took place inside the building.
Once police arrived, a second gunfight ensued in the driveway where the suspect was ultimately killed.
ISP Capt. Dave Bursten says Lents saw the man outside Black Oak Armaments, at 4739 U.S. 50, between Washington and Montgomery about 1:35 p.m. and that is when the man opened fire.
Bursen says Lents returned fire, killing the man.
Lents who was shot several times was taken by helicopter to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville with non-life threatening injuries. His condition is not yet known at this time.
The Daviess County coroner is on the scene along with ISP detectives.
Residents and business owners in the area reported they heard about a half dozen rounds fire when police arrived on the scene.
A group of neighbors living across the street from the business told reporters they saw law enforcement officers make their way to the backyard area between the residence of Keith Loughmiller and his business Black Oak Armaments and begin firing additional shots.
