Severe Weather Strikes Listening Area

Last updated on Thursday, June 27, 2013

(UNDATED) - Emergency management officials in Lawrence County received unconfirmed reports of a possible tornado touchdown Wednesday afternoon.

This was in an area just west of Bedford, near Springville and Williams.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts near 70 mph in the area and Lawrence County officials confirmed trees and power lines were down.

Officials also said there was a great deal of flash flooding in the area.

There weren't immediate reports of major structural damage, but there were reports of some roof damage and swing sets that were blown over.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, more than 6,000 Lawrence County residents were without power, Duke Energy reported. Officials with Duke Energy said officials were fanning out to make repairs from the regional office in Bedford.

Bedford officials said a tree fell on a house, cars were damaged and an outbuilding was destroyed on Twin Ponds Road. Other parts of the state saw storm-related damage after the system moved through.

Flash flood warnings were in effect for parts of Greene and Owen counties where up to 2 inches of rain had fallen.

Water was reported to have covered lanes of traffic in Terre Haute. In some areas, the water was almost over the curbs.

Duke Energy reported more than 9,000 customers were without power throughout the state at one point.
