Rotary Club Essay Winners

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Rotary Club's Bedford North Lawrence "Students of the Month" were invited to write an essay on the Rotary International theme of the year, Peace through Service.

The essays were judged by a Rotary committee with the identity of the students hidden from the committee. Two essay winners were chosen and each were given a monetary scholarship.

BNL senior Miley Nikirk was one of the winners of the essay contest. She stressed ways that she will serve others in the future building on her foundation of serving that she has learned through her family and her Girl Scout experiences. Nikirk will study pharmacy at the University of Kentucky and hopefully serve others by worldwide mission service projects.

BNL senior Abel Becker, the other essay winner, stressed serving creates an atmosphere of peace. Serving others is based on creating fairness which he sees as the core of service.

He also emphasized the fact that he had learned community involvement through his family. In college he plans to continue volunteer activities. Becker will attend Wabash College studying fine arts and English and playing soccer.
