Last updated on Thursday, June 13, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Bedford’s Relay for Life kicks off Friday and continues Saturday at the Parkview track.

Nearly 30 teams will cover the infield with tents, games and activities during the overnight event that encourages teams to walk or run laps from beginning to end.

Tammy Smith, Relay event chairwoman says so far, $20,000, but that amount will jump during the event. The goal is to raise $57,400 for the American Cancer Society.

One team that has been hard at work to raise Relay funds is DumonStrong.

Dumon McCain, 14, has brain cancer. His mom Amy McNeely said her team has sold T-shirts, DumonStrong window decals, photographs and Pampered Chef products. raised $1,364 so far and hope to add to that by selling sno-cones during Relay.

Dumon spent five days in the hospital last week, she said, but he plans on being at Relay for Life, where he will serve as grand marshal and lead the youth survivor lap along with cancer survivor Haley Jenkins. He continues to receive chemotherapy, and in January, completed 33 rounds of proton beam radiation.

Whether you come to do walk laps or take part in Relay fun, or visit with survivors, Smith said Relay is a night for celebrating the lives of cancer survivors and remembering those whose lives were taken by cancer.
