(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after he allegedly mugged a woman outside of Rusty's West End Steakhouse early Sunday morning and then led police on a chase that ended with him crashing into a Bedford Police vehicle injuring himself and the officer.
According to the Bedford Police log, officers were alerted to the mugging after an employee at Rusty's called 911 at 3:59 a.m. to report a woman had entered the bar and reported she had been mugged in the parking lot. The man fled the scene in a black Ford F-150.
Police arrested 34-year-old Alan Lee Tolbert, of 618 F St., on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment, robbery with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest by force, resisting arrested by fleeing in a vehicle, operating a vehicle while never licensed, operating a vehicle under a controlled substance, reckless driving, criminal recklessness with a vehicle and intimidation with a deadly weapon.
Officers from Lawrence County and Mitchell Police Departments assisted in the pursuit.
According to the Lawrence County Police log, officers found Tolbert traveling south on Oolitic Road. The pursuit continued to Lincoln Avenue to Mitchell Road, then to 28th Street and headed south. The chase continued west on 16th Street, to Ind. 37 and continued south where the truck crashed into a police vehicle at Ind. 37 and 35th Street.
According to a Bedford Police report, 32-year-old BPD Sgt. Tim Chen attempted to pass Tolbert's truck to slow him down. That is when the truck rammed the right side of the department's 2008 Ford Explorer. That caused both vehicles to spin out of control and run off the right side of the highway into the embankment. The police vehicle stopped, while the truck hit a traffic sign, flipped on its top and then flipped back over into an upright position.
Tolbert was thrown from the truck.
Both Tolbert and Chen complained of back pain and were treated and released from the hospital.
