Lyons Strawberry Festival Kicks Off Today

Last updated on Saturday, June 1, 2013

(LYONS) - The annual Lyons Strawberry Festival will be this weekend, starting with a parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Sabrina Westfall of the Greene County Daily World reports that this year's theme for the parade is "Life as it should be," and will follow the route of State Road 67 from the medical clinic to the fire station.

Events will continue Sunday at noon at the Lyons Town Park, where there will be entertainment, events and an auction.

Organizer Jo Halt said there will be a variety of vendors set up in the park Sunday, including Avon, Longaberger, Bloomfield State Bank, Holtsclaw Sales and Service, and Greene County General Hospital. Martha Waggoner will be at the event as a clown.

White River Valley Lyons Elementary School sixth-grader McKinley Frye will reign over the festival as the 2013 Strawberry Festival Queen. She was selected based on academic achievement.

Throughout the day there will also be live music, organized by Sheriff Terry Pierce, a Classic Car Drive-In, ice cream and strawberry shortcake.

Those interested in showing off their classic cars do not have to pre-register, they can just show up at the park, Holt said.

There will be kids slides and bounces houses set up in the park as well.

The baby contest will start at noon, and registration for the contest starts at 11:30 a.m. Halt said there is always a big turnout for the baby contest.

A basketball free throw contest will start at 1:30 p.m. Those interested can register just before the event.

Several items will be on the auction block, starting at 2 p.m., including a quilt. Halt said there will also be handmade wooden chairs created by Lyons native Buck Mullis.

The Open Class Horse Pull will start at 3 p.m. in the park.
