(MITCHELL) - Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann spent most of the day Friday in Lawrence County meeting with agriculture and industry leaders in the morning, touring PRD Inc. over lunch, meeting with area elected officials and then capped off the day as the featured speaker at the Lawrence County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner at Spring Mill Inn.
Jeff Routh, of the Times Mail reports, Ellspermann is visiting all of Indiana's 92 counties.
Ellsperman says visiting local government officials and businesses and residents, allows the statehouse to be more efficient and productive.
"We were one of three states to have a serious discussion about lowering taxes during these tough economic times," she said. "We are the only state to actually cut taxes while still funding increases in infrastructure."
But she explained her main emphasis is to put Hoosiers to work. She said the higher-than-average unemployment in the area is concerning, especially since Indiana was voted the "Best in the Midwest" for business and second in the nation for being business friendly. The state also has the highest percentage of manufacturing jobs in the nation.
"We have to look forward to the next generation," she said. "We have some of the finest technology at Crane and other military institutions in the state. We feel we can pick up some of the orphan activities to grow these operations. We can do the work for 70 percent of the cost of doing business in many other places.
"We need to grow our industries; take the intellectual property that we have in the private and military sectors and transfer it to the public sector; grow the medical bioscience industry; as well as grow the food and agriculture industries."
Congressman Todd Young, R-Bloomington, also spoke to those assembled for the event. He said although the Republican Party didn't do as well as hoped in the 2012 election cycle, "We did not lose the battle of ideas," he said. "Our ideas and beliefs were correct. We didn't make the gains we had hoped, but we can still make a difference."
The annual dinner is organized and sponsored by the Lawrence County Republican Women's Club.
