Linton Festival Kicks Off Today

Last updated on Saturday, June 8, 2013

(LINTON) - The 108th Linton Freedom Festival will kick off this Saturday with the 14th annual Freedom Festival Open Golf Tournament.

Sabrina Westfall of the Greene County Daily World reports that the tournament is sponsored by the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce and serves as a fundraiser for the Linton Freedom Festival. It will take place at the Phil Harris Golf Course, located on State Road 54 East in Linton.

The cost is $45 for Phil Harris Golf Course members, and $60 for non-members. The cost includes tee packs, green fees, cart, lunch, hole prizes and door prizes.

Those interested in taking part can call 847-4790 to reserve a space for the two-man 27-hole flighted tournament.

A fundraising 5K Run/Fitness walk is set for Saturday, June 15 at Linton-Stockton High School, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The cost for the event is a $20 pre-registration fee or $25 the day of the event. There will be category-based trophies, medals and ribbons. There will be drinks and fruit available at the event.

The Classic Cruisers will be hosting a fundraising class car cruise-in, with proceeds benefiting the Riley Children's Hospital and local charitable events.

The cruise in will be at Linton's Humphreys Park June 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and awards will be given at 3 p.m. There will be awards for Best of Show, Club Participation, Linton Chamber of Commerce and the Top 50.

The Linton Freedom Festival Miss Sparkler, Mister Firecracker and Baby Freedom contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the car show at the Band Stand in the park.

Children ages 3- to 5-years-old are eligible to take part in the Miss Sparkler and Mister Firecracker contest. Babies up to 12 months are eligible for the Baby Freedom contest.

The registration fee for the contest is $10.

The winners of the Miss Sparkler and Mister Firecracker contest will represent Linton in the July 4 Freedom Festival Parade.

Live entertainment will start at the Band Shell in the Park Saturday, June 29, with Brandon Tiek and the 3rd Row Boys performing contemporary and gospel music from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Music will continue in the park until Saturday, July 6, and will feature local favorites such as Mike Fonderhide and Friends, Kade Puckett and Addiction.

James Gang Amusements Carnival will be set up in the back of the park from July 1 to July 6, starting at 6 p.m. each evening.

Chamber Administrative Assistant Nadine Roush said there will be wrist bands available for the rides every night of the carnival.

The Marketplace will be open from July 3 to 6. Vendors are encouraged to sign up soon to reserve a spot in the vending area outside the Roy Clark Community Building.

Roush said the Marketplace is usually only open three days, but with the carnival being in town until July 6, they made the decision to stay open an extra day.

The Linton Freedom Festival Parade, with the theme "Many Faces of America", will kick off at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, July 4 with Lee and Holly Lynn Marcum performing the National Anthem.

Roush noted the fly over for the start of the parade will be a little different this year with the fly over of a World War II aircraft, rather than the traditional military aircrafts.

Roush said to day, there are 45 parade entrants signed up, and they are receiving more entries daily.

The fireworks display will take place at 10:30 p.m. in the park, Roush noted.

The 2013 Linton Freedom Festival will officially end Saturday, July 6, with the karaoke, presented by Fast Freddie and the 8 Ball, at the bandshell in the park at 7 p.m. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m.

There will be cash prizes for the first and second places for participants age 16 and under, as well as over age 16. Contestants will be judged on talent, accuracy and audience participation.

Sunrise construction is sponsoring the karaoke contest. Roush said the Chamber is in need of one more $75 sponsor for the event.
