Lawrence County Museum Features Display Of Army Chaplain Rev. Altieri

Last updated on Sunday, June 9, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Through the end of June, memorabilia of Army chaplain Rev. Dominic J. Altieri will be on display in the Lawrence County Museum.

The Community Room on the second floor of the museum.

Altieri served in World War II as well as Korea. The display includes photos and memorabilia from Altieri's personal life as well as his time in the military.

Also Edward L. Hutton Research Library continues that celebration with its featured item, a fife that was used in the Civil War.

The fife was donated by the descendants of George Washington Terry, who was a chaplain with the 97th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War.

Although the fife was not actually used by Terry, it was used by another soldier (whose name is lost to history). He kept a diary during his service, and the museum has a transcript of that as well as genealogical information on the family.

Terry survived the war and returned to southern Indiana. His activities after his service included the founding of Oolitic Baptist Church.
