Lawrence County 4-H Dog Club Raising Funds For Storage Building

Last updated on Saturday, June 1, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The 4-H Dog Club needs help raising money for a storage building.

This year the 4-H Dog Club added a new agility program, causing the club'smembership to double but also leading to new expenses.

Gerri Basinger, her daughter Angela and son Mario are the co-leaders of the 4-H Dog Club. The club provides classes and training to 50 kids and 54 dogs, and last year, the Basingers added agility, a state-fair class, to the curriculum.

"The club size has doubled because of agility," Gerri Basinger said, explaining that the class took the membership from last year's 24 to this year's 50.

However, the class requires new equipment and a storage facility.

Agility is a dog obstacle-course including A-frames, a teeter-totter, a board walk, an open tunnel and assorted jumps. The club has been raising funds to build andpurchase the equipment for the class, but still needs donations for a storage shed to store the equipment at the 4-H fairgrounds. Although the club has been able to raise most of the needed money through donations and fundraisers, Basinger reports the group still needs to raise $600 before June 15 to purchase their storage shed.

Starting in April, the club meets twice a week until the county fair. Then themembers begin training to take their dogs to the state fair.

The club will be doing an agility demonstration June 8 at Safe Night. Members will also be showing obedience and showmanship at the county fair starting at 4 p.m. July 6 and agility and rally at noon July 7.

To make a donation, contact Gerri Basinger at 279-0107 or (812) 329-9141. The club will also be collecting donations at the Safe Night demonstration.
