(MONTGOMERY) - Loogootee Police Chief Kelly Rayhill says the gunman killed during a shoot out with state trooper had moved to the Loogootee and Shoals area between five and seven years ago from California.
60-year-old James Jones was killed after he fired on ISP Trooper Jarrod Lents on Monday.
The incident occurred at about 1:35 p.m. Monday when Lents responded to a report of a disturbance at the Black Oak Armaments Gun Shop in Montgomery.
Jones allegedly got into a disagreement with the owner of the gun shop and shots were fired inside the store. When Lents arrived gun fire was again exchanged in the parking lot.
Lentz, who was wearing a bullet proof vest, suffered two gunshot wounds. The vest prevented more serious injuries but the shot to his back did break the skin and left an open wound. He was also suffered a serious wound to his arm. He was flown by helicopter to Deaconess Hospital where he was treated and then released.
Jones died at the scene.
Chief Rayhill says Jones moved around in the area a lot and did have minor incidents with police in the past, but no serious offenses.
Rayhill says there were some domestic issues a few years ago.
Officials say the shooting is still under investigation by the Daviess County Prosecutor's Office and Indiana State Police.
