IU's Terrin Thomas Crowned Miss Indiana

(ZIONSVILLE) - Indiana University’s Terrin Thomas of Auburn was crowned Miss Indiana 2013 Saturday night in Zionsville.

MerrieBeth Cox, Miss Indiana 2012, a senior at Purdue University, passed on the crown to the 74th Miss Indiana.

20-year-old Terrin a vocalist, sang "I'm Afraid This Might Be Love," for which she received a preliminary talent award on Wednesday night. Terrin will represent Indiana at the Miss America Competition, in Atlantic City, NJ, on September 15.

First runner-up to Miss Indiana was Miss Metropolitan, Hannah Clingan, 23, of Covington.

Second runner-up was Miss Central Indiana, Gracie Lyons, 21, of Elkhart.

Third runner-up was Miss South Central, Courtney Jurick, 23, of Valparaiso.

Fourth runner-up was Miss Duneland, Rachael Bazzell, 24, of Zionsville.

A record-breaking 32 young women between the ages of 17 and 24, from all over Indiana, competed this week in two preliminary nights of competition. They completed in talent, lifestyle and fitness in swim wear, evening wear and onstage question. Each of them also had a ten-minute private interview with judges. From this, a Top 11 group of finalists was named at the beginning of tonight's competition.

For the fourth year, fans were able to vote online for a favorite contestant who was then named the Peoples' Choice 12th Semi-Finalist and competed in tonight's final competition. Miss Vincennes University, Laura Merida, 19, of Georgetown was named the Peoples' Choice Semi-Finalist.

The remaining Semi-Finalists were:

Joni McMechan Checchia, Miss Indiana 1988 celebrated her 25thAnniversary by presenting the "Joy of Life" Award, in honor and memory of Joy Robbins, Joni's Aunt and a dear friend of the Miss Indiana Organization. This year's winner, who was anonymously chosen, based upon her essay, was Miss Haynes-Apperson Festival, Zarah Mumaw, originally from Niles Michigan and now living in Lafayette.

Other awards were presented to Zarah Mumaw and Hannah Clingan for Outstanding Interview, Miss Collegiate North Sunee Fleshman, for Non-Finalist Interview and Miss Northeast Kaitlin Karr won Non-Finalist Talent for her tap dance to "Knock on Wood."

The Children's Miracle Network "Miracle Maker" Award was presented to Hannah Clingan. The Arts in Action Dance Award went to Rachael Bazzell. Miss Huntington Sara Alford of Poneto received the Newcomer Award. Miss Crossroads to America Presley Moreland of Bicknell received the Miss America Community Service Award, Miss Collegiate Indy Marisa Beaty of Muncie received the Miss America Academic Award. Beaty also won the Hoosier Spirit Award as Miss Congeniality.
