Hoosier National Forest Teams With Bedford Library To Officer Children Programs

Last updated on Thursday, June 13, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Four children’s programs are scheduled in June and July by Hoosier National Forest staff at the Bedford Public Library.

Each program is tied to a book and will explore a story and then give children an opportunity to learn more about nature. All programs begin at 3 p.m.

June 14 is the first program; children will hear a story about a girl and her father spending a quiet evening in the woods. Participants will learn more about local owls, how owls hunt for food and which owls you might see on the Hoosier National Forest. Children will also be able to dissect an owl pellet to discover what an owl eats for dinner. This program is recommended for children 6-12. Children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult.

The June 26 story will be about frogs and their life cycle, learn the difference between frogs and toads, and listen to frog and toad sounds. They'll then each make a frog craft. This program is open to all ages but most appropriate for ages 5-9.

Caterpillars are the topic for July 10. The book is about how caterpillars change into butterflies, we'll talk about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. There will be a craft for each child to make their own chrysalis and butterfly. All ages are welcome but the program is most appropriate for ages 5-9.

The last program is July 24 where the children will hear the story Farewell to Shady Glade. In this story about a raccoon and his friends, the animals lose their home and have to create a new backyard habitat. Together children will learn to craft a habitat and play a game to learn about habitat loss. This program is also open to all ages but most appropriate for ages 5-9.
