Former U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton Will Speak At Becky Skillman Leadership Institute

Last updated on Saturday, June 1, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Former U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton will serve as keynote speaker for the first Becky Skillman Leadership Institute, slated for July 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kari’s Gym at the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County’s Limestone building.

Hamilton now serves as director of Indiana University's Center on Congress.

Joining him will be Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.). Coats previously was unable to participate because of a scheduling conflict, but now his calendar had been cleared and he looks forward to joining Hamilton.

The theme of the Skillman Leadership Institute mirrors BGCLC's motto: "Cherish the past; embrace the future."

The institute, which is designed to serve as an annual fundraiser for BGCLC, also will feature Indianapolis Colts motivational speaker Josh Bleill, former IU football player and fitness expert Matt Mayberry, Dr. Bryan Schneider of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, and Evan Brown, a Lawrence County native and Chicago-based attorney specializing in technology law.

"Over the course of the past few months there has been an incredible amount of support behind the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County," said Kyle Brown, chief professional officer. "I just want to thank Becky Skillman for her willingness to help create this event and load it with local, state and national leaders whose insight and wisdom will provide those who attend an incredible learning opportunity.

"I'd also like to thank her for her desire to stage this event at the Limestone building and for it to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence County. At such a pivotal time in the new life of this organization it is comforting to see someone of her stature to stand as a champion for our organization. On behalf of all our boys and girls, we appreciate her leadership and thank her for her support."

Tickets are $50 for the event, and sponsorships are available at three levels -- $1,000, $750 and $500. Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis will facilitate discussions, and lunch will be provided by Carla's Catering.

Brown urged citizens to stop by the club in the weeks leading up to the event.
"I encourage everyone to visit the Limestone building as it is truly an amazing asset to this community," he emphasized. "We want the children who walk through our doors to walk out better prepared for their future.

"As a community, we talk about economic growth and community development and pressure leaders to create that growth. It is my opinion that we need to focus our attention earlier in the growth process of a person; to focus on them as a child and to enhance what they learn in our schools to create a much stronger, more prepared adult.

"The Boys and Girls Club is the front door to economic growth and for the long-term development of our community."
