Fire Destroys Home

Last updated on Thursday, June 20, 2013

(HURON) - Firefighters from two departments battled a blaze that destroyed a home on Elrod Lane Wednesday.

Firefighters from Huron and Marion Volunteer Fire Department were called the home of Connie Lewis at 6:05 p.m.

"The home was fully involved when we arrived," says Huron Fire Chief Mark Jones. "There was a 20-year-old female that did suffer smoke Inhalation. She was treated by Rural Metro ambulance personnel at the scene. The woman was Connie's granddaughter and was living in the home."

Jones says firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly.

"We had a quick knock down," Jones says. "But the home was destroyed."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"We know it started in a bedroom where the woman was sleeping," Jones says. "But we are still looking into the cause."

Jones says the woman was able to escape unharmed, but was over come with smoke.

"She was lucky," Jones added.

TOPES responded to the scene and provided water and snacks to firefighters.

"It was really hot," Jones says. "Between wearing the turn-out gear and the outside temperatures and the heat from the fire, it gets pretty warm."

Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours.

Mitchell Police officers and Rural Metro ambulance personnel assisted at the scene.
