(SALEM) - The East Washington Water Corporation plans to purchase more water from the City of Salem.
Marcia Walker of the Salem Leader reports that Todd Ewen, president of the corporation's board, along with company representatives Nathan Risen and Sharon Stahl, recently met with the city's board of public works and safety to request a fifth connection.
The connection would be in the area of State Road 160 and the bypass. Ewen explained that it would allow the cooperation to better take care of customers in the Canton area, a part of the corporations service area that was stressed last year during the drought.
Salem Mayor David Bower said the city wasn't agreeing to the fifth connection because to support the water cooperation's plans to feel water to poultry operations, that the city couldn't dictate the corporation's customers.
Ewen said East Washington does have two new poultry operations coming online and that usage would increase by 25,000 gallons a day. He said the corporation purchases about 35 million gallons a month from the city and that last year, it purchased 281 million gallons from Salem.
Clerk-Treasurer Pat Persinger estimated that sale of water to East Washington generates between $50,000 and $65,000 a month depending on water usage.
Drew Wright, attorney for the city and Steve Tolliver, with Aqua Utilites, which manages the city's wastewater treatment plant, suggested that some idea of the delivery rate was needed to be sure the city's system could handle the additional load.
