City Will Pay 75 Percent Of Employee's Health Care Costs

Last updated on Wednesday, June 12, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford City Council voted Tuesday night to continue to pay 75 percent of city employee’s health insurance.

The council, at budget time, passed an ordinance in which the city would pay only 70 percent of employee's health insurance cost. They did that because officials were not sure there would be enough money in the budget to cover any increase cost during the renewal process. The city's policy is renewed every year on June 30th.

"We had a pretty positive renewal this year and I am pretty happy with it," says Mayor Shawna Girgis. "We enacted the former ordinance in case we had a bad renewal so we could see how the budget was."

In other business:

* The council voted to amend the ordinance addressing the city's procurement cards, or credit cards. In the past, city officials would have to come to the clerk-treasurer's office to obtain a procurement card, then purchase the items, return the card and the receipt.

Currently city officials are able to keep the cards and just return the receipts.

"We needed to update the current policy to reflect the current procedures," City Attorney Greg Pittman told the council. "It also stated that the cards had to be turned in to the second deputy clerk-treasurer, now they just have to be turned in to the clerk-treasurer's office."

The city has also switched from NBA, which provided the city with Mastercard to Bedford Federal which provides the city Visa.

The council also voted to modify the procurement employee hand book to reflect those changes.

"We had to modify the handbook to match the current practice of handling the procurement cards," says Pittman. "And instead of mentioning a certain bank, or Visa or Mastercard, I used more general wording so the handbook will not have to be changed every time we change banks."
