(BLOOMINGTON) - Michael Angle Jr, who stabbed 27-year-old Lauren Kahn more than 20 times killing her, will face a jury on Sept. 3.
Kahn was working as a clerk at the Garden of Eden, an adult entertainment store when Angle entered the store in November 2011 and stabbed Kahn.
Angle admitted to the crime, and was charged with felony murder.
He did not leave the store with any cash, according to a probable cause affidavit on the case.
Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Kehr says Angle did not provide an explicit explanation for stabbing Kahn with a Gerber pocket knife with a 4-5 inch blade and he gave no explanation on why the intended robbery ended in murder.
Police were given no indication that Angle and Kahn knew each other.
Angle told officers he decided to rob the in the 700 block of South Walnut Street based on the fact that the only employee of the store was by herself and "it looked like an easy store to rob," according to the affidavit. "Michael stated that he had grown tired of being broke and not having any money as well as being depressed and lonely."
Angle gave his account of the stabbing and attempted robbery after he turned himself in at the Monroe County Jail about 90 minutes after the murder. Accompanying him to the jail were Angle's two sisters and his mother, who told police her son had gotten out of the military in August.
He brought with him, in a separate bag, the blood-covered clothing he wore at the time of the stabbing. He described where he had discarded the knife, which police found in the street.
Police says Angle entered Garden of Eden, looked around the store for a bit, than tried to get Kahn to show him something in a display case. He then pulled the knife from a pocket and started stabbing her.
"An interview was conducted with Michael where he did provide a very detailed confession to having stabbed Lauren Kahn," the affidavit reads. He then told officials that as he started walking toward the area where the money was kept, a man opened the door, causing him to chase this witness and leave without actually getting any money.
This witness was the person who called 911 for help.
