According to Orange County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Bill Fullington, the accident happened at 5:20 p.m. on County Road 25 South, about three miles west of Paoli.

Police responded to the site after a 911 call. When officers arrived they found a vehicle on its top in the roadway and two people had been thrown from the vehicle and a third person had been partially ejected.

Police say the vehicle had been traveling west on County Road 25 South when for an unknown reason it went off the north side of the road, hit a utility pole and then flipped onto the roof.

The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Lance Smith, of Mitchell and 18-year-old Sean Griffith, of Paoli, were thrown from the vehicle and found lying in the roadway.

A rear seat passenger, 18-year-old Joshua Rice, of Paoli was partially ejected from the vehicle.

Smith and Griffith were taken from the scene by helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital. Rice was taken by ambulance to Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital and then taken by helicopter to Louisville.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Paoli police officers, French Lick police officers, Paoli Fire Department personnel, Orange County Rural District I personnel and IU Health Hospital ambulance personnel.
