(UNDATED) - Study shows 49 percent of adults text while driving compared to 43 percent of teens who text and drive.
State leaders are reminding Indiana motorists about the dangers of texting and driving. The latest survey shows adults are texting and driving even more than teens - 49% percent compared to 43%.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says those who text and drive are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash. Institute Executive Director Mary Allen says state police are stepping up their road patrols this summer.
"We'll have enforcement efforts out Memorial Day through Labor Day just to show extra activity on the roadways that it is important to saving lives," she said. "The prevention piece is critical for us."
AT&T brought a driving simulator to Circle Centre Mall in Indianapolis Thursday. The simulator helps people experience the dangers of texting and driving.
"Last year 330,000 people were injured because of texting and everyday 11 teens die, " said AT&T of Indiana CEO George Fleetwood. "We don't think it's a problem, we think it's an epidemic. And we're asking people to take a pledge that it can wait."
