(MITCHELL) - Spring Mill Bible Camp will celebrate its 50th anniversary Saturday with an all-day homecoming and reunion.
Jeff Routh of the Times-Mail reports that the event, which will take place at the camp just east of Mitchell on State Road 60, begins at 9 a.m., but a breakfast will be served from 8-10 a.m.
Spring Mill Bible Camp was the brainchild of Roy VanTassel, who was the minister of the Mitchell Church of Christ in 1963. He had a vision of creating a camp to teach children about the Bible.
The word got out and Harry Bishop, a member of the local congregation, donated 75 acres of land across from Spring Mill State Park.
From this, Spring Mill Bible Camp developed.
Over the years, thousands of children have attended the camp, and numerous staff members have donated their time to teach and inspire the youth of the area about Jesus.
The homecoming and reunion day will be a time to honor and remember those who have made Spring Mill Bible Camp possible as well as supporting future plans and rekindling friendships that have been made during these 50 years the camp has been in operation, said Evelyn VanTassel True, daughter of the camp's founder.
Games and activities for all ages will include inflatables, a corn hole tournament, a bean bag toss, a ring toss, a silent auction and photo booths. Two groups, Act One and Cross Eyed, will present drama performances.
Allen Burris will speak in the afternoon during the formal program and there will be three dedications -- the Carolyn Davis infirmary; the Lawrence Brown Playground and the Lester and Gladys Burris Museum. Those attending will learn about the history of the camp, learn current and future plans for the camp, meet the new resident agent and former and current board members and meet the recipients of the Vaughn Clip and Lowell Davis awards.
In addition to breakfast from 8-10 a.m.; lunch, will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be vendor booths open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m.
