(BEDFORD) - Sheriff Sam Craig reported to the commissioners Tuesday there were 129 inmates at the jail, of those 20 were women and 21 were Department of Correction holds.

The county gets paid $35 a day for housing a DOC inmate. That money is placed in the county's general fund. Craig would like to create a line item for the jail and have the money placed there.

"Since the jail has bee paid off and for sometime, the money has gone into the general fund for the county to use. I would like to see a fund set up for the jail," Craig says. "The building is getting some age on it and the money could be used for much needed maintenance."

On Tuesday the income from holding DOC inmates was $735.

One issue that needs addressed is the number of segregation cells in the jail.

"We don't have enough," Craig says. "Those cells are used for those that come in with drug, alcohol and psychological issues and we are having more and more inmates coming in with those issues and we just don't have enough segregation cells for them. It is an issue that will have to be addressed."

Commissioner Bill Spreen agreed with Craig and though the money should be put aside for repairs and improvements at the jail.

"It just makes sense," Spreen added. "We know we are going to face some issues with the building because of its age. If we have the money set aside we wouldn't have to worry about having to find the funds to fix the problems."

Craig will now present the request to the county council.
