(MITCHELL) - Barry Powell, among Lawrence County’s most accomplished artists, has secured another magazine cover.
Bob Bridge of the Times-Mail reports that in 2010 "Morning Attack," a scene featuring three American Indians Powell rendered via colored pencils, graced the April edition of Muzzleloader, a magazine catering to fans of black powder hunting and shooting.
Soon, Powell's "Contemplation," a 20-by-16-inch image of an American Indian painted with oils on a masonite panel, will be published on the cover of Muzzle Blasts.
"The art is a picture of an Indian in deep thought while staring out a window at Fort Niagara," Powell explained. "He looks as if he was in deep thought concerning an upcoming battle, or maybe considering the terms and conditions of new treaty agreement. Hence the name."
"Contemplation" ranks among Powell's favorite works because of the strong contrasts of light and shadow.
"I teach in my art classes that strong contrast is the key to a successful painting," he said. "I created the art last year and felt it might be good enough to submit to a magazine for consideration as cover art.
"During an earlier email conversation with one of my favorite frontier artists, David Wright, he suggested I send my work to Muzzle Blasts, the official magazine of the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association."
Powell followed Wright's advice, and he received a message two weeks ago informing him his piece had been selected for the May 2013 issue.
Landing magazine covers was a dream Powell first envisioned nearly 20 years ago while painting buses at Carpenter Body Works.
"I would pass the long days by dreaming of a time when I could be lucky enough to have my art featured on the cover of this publication," he recalled. "Every month, my imagination was refueled by the cover art on the new issues of this magazine, and when Carpenter's closed in 1995, I became a full-time artist. Being published by this magazine was an important goal."
Powell's art can be viewed regularly at the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville. His works also can be seen through April at the Southside Art League's gallery in Greenwood, where he has been designated feature artist.
