Pekin Woman Takes Police On High Speed Chase

Last updated on Friday, May 31, 2013

(SALEM) - A Pekin woman was arrested last week when she led police on a high-speed chase.

Police arrested 56-year-old Brinda Dyer after she hit a trailer on Fairview Drive in Salem and then drove through the yard.

The Salem Leader reports, Salem Police Officer Michael Voelz saw Dyer's driving a 1993 Chevrolet truck, leaving the area. An off-duty officer got behind the truck on Jackson Street. As Voelz came up behind them, he activated his emergency lights to make a traffic stop and that is when Dyer fled.

The truck traveled about three miles on Jackson Street/State Road 60 East, going left of center several times, at one point nearly striking a vehicle in the westbound lane. Officers say the truck reached speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Voelz says as the Dyer's approached a vehicle that had slowed to let officers pass, she had to rapidly apply the brakes, causing them to lock. The truck veered into the westbound lane, skidded off the road, stopping in a ditch west of the Blue River bridge.

When Voelz told Dyer to get out of the truck she claimed she didn't know he was a police officer and that she was fleeing from drug dealers. Dyer fell as she exited the truck and became combative and verbally abusive with officers.

Dyer was taken St. Vincent Salem Hospital for a blood alcohol test. She had to be removed from the police car as she refused to get out. Dyer's blood alcohol measured three times the legal limit.

She was arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement by vehicle, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .15 or more, operating a vehicle while intoxicated while never receiving a driver's license and reckless driving.
