(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell school board voted unanimously to close campus at Mitchell High School.
The long tradition of students leaving to eat lunch at local restaurants, home or other places will end in August.
Currently about 400 students are enrolled at the junior high school, and another 580 are enrolled at the high school. The two schools share the cafeteria and kitchen, which operate through multiple lunch periods.
The kitchen and cafeteria do not have the capacity to serve meals to all of the students so officials allowed students to leave for lunch.
But because of ongoing disciplinary problems, and from advice from Advance Education school accreditation team and Indiana Insurance Company the board voted to stop the tradition.
Currently the school system is spending an estimated $2 million to expand the kitchen and cafeteria at the high school to accommodate all the students who will now be eating at school. The expansion should be complete by the time students return in the fall.
Officials are also considering letting students eat outside if weather permits, but they will not be allowed to leave campus.
