Makeshift Bloomington Homeless Shelter Comes Down

Last updated on Wednesday, May 1, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - A makeshift Bloomington homeless shelter has come down ahead of a city deadline.

The Herald-Times reports that parts of a large tent that had been serving as a homeless shelter were packed into a pickup truck minutes before the noon deadline Monday.

City officials had said the tent on West 11th Street sat on property that's zoned residential multifamily and not allowed for a temporary or permanent shelter.

Organizers erected the tent on land owned by Bloomington Urban Greenhouse and Shop because the city has no other low-barrier summer homeless shelters that don't turn away individuals who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A wintertime shelter has closed for the season, and a shelter that had operated the last three summers did not open this year.
