"Lest We Forget" Features Reading Of Constitution

Last updated on Friday, May 24, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Council member Mark Mathis who is a profoundly proud patriot has organized the Memorial Day activities on the square.

"Lest We Forget" will feature the reading of the Constitution. Mathis noted a lot of good men and women have fallen in defense of this revered document.

"Freedom is never free," Mathis says "They've defended it against enemies -- foreign and domestic. I think it will be good to hear -- word for word. There will be no interpretation whatsoever. We're simply going to read it from one end to the other."

The setting for the celebration, scheduled for Monday from 3-6 p.m. on the northwest corner of the square, has shifted so it is not so hot and people can come with their lawn chairs and sit on the courthouse lawn under the shade trees.

Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis will perform the "Star Spangled Banner;" the entire assembly will recite "The Pledge of Allegiance;" and the Lawrence County Home-School Choir and Mathis and his family will sing a selection of patriotic tunes.

The Bloomington wing of the U.S. Air Patrol will present the colors, and Mathis will play "To the Colors" and "Taps" on a bugle. A group of Civil War re-enactors is bringing a historic cannon to display.

Mathis says the Stone Pig Smokehouse Restaurant on J Street will be open for those wishing to dine before or after the ceremony.

The Republican Party of Lawrence County and the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will hand out copies of the Constitution to the first 300 to show up Monday afternoon.
