(JASPER COUNTY) - A car full of Indiana University students driving home from school was involved in a fatal crash on northbound Interstate 65 Saturday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened just north of the Remington exit before 2 p.m.

The Indiana Daily Student said the students were all IU students who lived in the Chicago area.

Police said the students were in a Ford Explorer, driving north in the right lane, when a right tire blew and caused the driver to lose control.

The Explorer veered to the right, went back to the left and rolled approximately 3 times before it came to rest upright in the left lane, officials said.

Police said John Malone Jr., 20, of River Forest, Illinois, was not wearing his seat belt. He was ejected from the car and the vehicle came to rest on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner of massive blunt force trauma.

Michael Rende, 20, of LaGrange, Illinois, was ejected from the vehicle, authorities said. He was airlifted to Advocate Christ Hospital in Illinois with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Jason Blackman, 20, of Wilmette, Illinois, was taken to Jasper County Hospital in Rensselaer with injuries to his ankle and ribs.

The driver, Mario Guagliardo, 20, of Deerfield, Illinois, was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to Jasper County Hospital with injuries to his hands, elbow and face, police said.

Jacob Newman, 20, of LaGrange, Illinois was the front seat passenger. He was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

All northbound lanes were closed during the investigation of the crash.
