(MONROE COUNTY) - Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance crews from the Bloomington Subdistrict have been scheduled to work 12-hour days chip sealing 21 lane miles of State Road 446 (Knightridge Road) from Dutch Ridge Road to Moores Pike, starting Tuesday morning.
INDOT flaggers will direct traffic around moving worksites.
The schedule calls for three days of chip sealing - and two days of fog sealing.
Operations will begin at the Dutch Ridge flasher light south of Lake Monroe and proceed north. Once at Moores Pike, north of the lake, crews will chip seal the southbound S.R. 446 lane. Daily operations scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. - would be set back should inclement weather occur.
Chip sealing is a pavement preservation measure that promises to save up to $10 in road repairs for every $1 invested in its application.
First, liquid asphalt is applied to the roadway. Then, small chips of limestone aggregate are placed on top. This seals the pavement against moisture and ultraviolet rays, extending service life and it restores surface friction, improving skid resistance. A follow-up fog seal (liquid asphalt overcoat) further seals the roadway from moisture and secures loose aggregate while dampening dust.
Motorists are urged to drive with caution on roads where chip seal is being applied. Tires can kick up freshly sprayed asphalt and loose stone which might cause damage to vehicles.
